We have photo documented the steps for installing a new knuckle on a Dana 44 axle. Here are the steps (Click images for larger view):
Install the ball joint sleeve that came with your new ball joints in the top of the axle |
Use the ball joint adjuster tool and screw the sleeve in about 3/4 of the way down. |
Install the knuckle on the axle. Thread on the bottom nut, and try to tighten it. At this point the lower ball joint nut will most likely just spin and not tighten. If the axle is under the truck, put a jack under the lower ball joint and put some pressure on it and tighten the nut untill the lower ball joint is seated. |
If the lower ball joint just spins when trying to tighten the nut, and the axle is not on the truck, put a large socket over thetop ball joint and pull the knuckle up with a clamp. The pressure will seat the lower ball joint enough and allow you to tighten the lower ball joint nut.
Tighten the lower ball joint to 60 foot pounds. |
Using the ball joint adjuster tool, tighten the sleeve to 50 foot pounds. |
Torque the lower ball joint to 140 foot pounds
Torque the upper ball joint to 80 foot pounds and install the cotter pin. If the cotter pin hole is not inline with the nut, tighten the nut until the cotter pin can be installed. Do not loosen the nut to align the hole to install cotter pin. |
